The best analogy to approach the replacing of your windows is that of the guy who calls the auto dealership, "I would like to buy a car." O.K. that's fine, but what make, how many doors, which engine, what price range...? Replacing your windows is a multi-faceted endeavor. Consider these questions:

New construction or replacement?
Which brand have you researched and / or are interested in?
Wood or vinyl?
Wood-grain, colored, or white vinyl?
Argon or krypton filled panes?
Super Spacer or PPG Intercept?
Casement, double hung, slider, picture...?
Glass breakage warranty or none?
Solarban 60 or Sungate 100 Low Emissivity coating?
Triple or double pane?

BIDDING. Consider working with a contractor who may be willing to do your window project for cost, plus a commission. There are many times during a project that work must be done only after discovering it post-bid. In other words, contractors bidding windows have the tendency to fatten their bid to cover any unseen future unknowns.
BRANDING. Marvin, Pella, and Anderson carry a price tag that accompanies their name. So consider other lesser known brands that are often many times larger than the well-known brands. Feature-rich window brands will assure that you are dealing with a company that knows its stuff.
